The Kitea System

The Kitea System aims to give patients, families and clinicians something they have never had before: visibility into intracranial pressure, outside of a hospital, in everyday life.

SENSOR
Roughly the size of a few small grains

The Kitea App logs each reading. Readings are recorded to reveal trends overtime.

Stores readings securely over time.

THE SYSTEM

The Sensor carries no battery of its own. It draws energy wirelessly from the wand only at the moment a reading is taken, then falls silent again. Removing the battery removes one of the biggest long-term failure points in implanted electronics, and is part of what allows the sensor to be designed for long-term implantation.
 

Underneath, the system runs on purpose-built firmware developed to medical-grade safety standards, the same rigour is applied to every part of how a Kitea reading reaches a patient's phone.

No battery, by design

Most medical implants are built from titanium. The Kitea Sensor uses hermetically sealed glass housing instead. A thin metal layer sealed between two layers of glass changes shape in a way the sensor can measure with precision, in a similar way to how a touchscreen senses the pressure of a finger. This is part of what allows the device to be built so small while remaining accurate over the long term.

Built to be biocompatable for the long term

Measuring pressure accurately inside one of the most sensitive environments in the body, is a hard engineering problem. Two design choices sit at the centre of it.
